Whenever we get a new SMB (small midsize business) client, the client is usually in some sort of emotional pain. Most of the time, the pain is the result of not making accounting for their business a priority. I understand why people don't make it a priority. As I have said, new SMB clients of our firm usually have a crisis with their business when they arrive in our office. They are in a lot of distress because their business is being injured by their accounting problems. I am sure all of you have heard Aesop's fable. It goes like this.....A man and his wife had the good fortune to possess a goose that laid a golden egg every day. For a while they were happy and lived well, but then they became impatient with how quickly they were accumulating their wealth. So they thought that if the goose could lay such a fine egg of gold, it must be filled with golden eggs. If they cut the goose open, they could get the gold all at once. Of course we all know what happened, the goose was just a goose and there was no golden eggs inside.
The moral to the story is simple enough...They focused on their immediate needs and wants and not the needs and wants of the Goose and as a result they lost everything. We can easily apply this story to our businesses. Your business is the goose that is laying the golden eggs. In order to continue to receive golden eggs from your goose, invest some of those golden eggs in your goose so it can continue to lay the golden eggs for years to come.
